At the opening of the four Gospels we met the man of the wilderness. He was the promised messenger; in the spirit and power of Elijah he turned the hearts of the people, led them to confess their sins, and made them wait for the mightier One who was coming after him. His ministry reaches its climax at the Jordan River. The sinless Jesus came to be baptized, and though John tried to prevent Him, Jesus said that it was fitting in this way to fulfill all righteousness.
