What ministry did John the Baptist fulfill, coming ahead of Jesus? If we do not rightly understand this question, we cannot fully realize the baptism of Jesus, His cross, and the gospel of the water and the Spirit. Many people, even as they profess to believe in Jesus, take the ministry of John the Baptist lightly or misunderstand it. But the Scripture does not testify of John the Baptist merely as one prophet among many. Jesus Himself said that John was “more than a prophet,” and testified, “Among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist” (Matthew 11:9, 11:11).
