In the wilderness, John the Baptist was proclaiming the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. Not only that, he was the one who would give Jesus the baptism that handed the sins of all the people of the world over to Him. Since John the Baptist was the last prophet of the age of the Old Testament and a man born into the house of the high priest, he was the servant of God who would hand the sins of all mankind over to Jesus through baptism according to the will of God.
